Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and traditional payment methods, focusing on their efficiency, accessibility, user adoption, and security. UPI, a digital payment system introduced in India, has revolutionized financial transactions with its real-time processing and minimal transaction costs. In contrast, traditional payment methods, including cash, checks, and credit/debit cards, have long been established but face challenges related to processing times, fees, and physical handling. The study analyzes the speed and cost-effectiveness of UPI compared to traditional payment methods, highlighting UPI’s advantages in providing instantaneous transactions and lower fees. It also examines accessibility, noting UPI’s convenience for tech-savvy users versus the universal acceptance of cash and the familiarity of credit/debit cards. User adoption trends reveal a rapid increase in UPI usage driven by its integration with digital technologies, while traditional methods remain prevalent due to their established infrastructure and reliability. Security is another critical aspect discussed, with UPI employing advanced measures such as multi-factor authentication and encryption, while traditional methods rely on established practices like chip technology and real-time fraud detection. Despite their respective strengths, both UPI and traditional payment methods face unique challenges in fraud prevention and user trust. The paper concludes by summarizing the key findings and exploring future trends in payment systems. It anticipates continued growth for UPI, driven by technological advancements and increasing digital literacy, while traditional methods may evolve to incorporate more digital features.
