Leveraging Cloud Computing for Big Data Analytics in Smart City Initiatives

Smart city initiatives generate massive, heterogeneous, and high-velocity data streams from sensors, connected infrastructure, citizen devices, and enterprise systems. Leveraging cloud computing for big data analytics has become critical to transform this raw data into actionable intelligence for urban planning, real-time operations, and sustainable governance. This paper outlines a conceptual framework in which cloud platforms provide elastic compute, storage, and managed analytics services to support smart city workloads such as traffic optimization, energy management, public safety, and environmental monitoring. It reviews key literature on big data and smart cities, discusses reference architectures and deployment patterns that combine cloud, edge, and IoT, and highlights data governance, privacy, and security considerations. Two architecture diagrams and two illustrative tables are provided to structure the discussion. The paper concludes by identifying open challenges related to interoperability, trust, and long-term sustainability of cloud-enabled smart city ecosystems.
