Abstract

Purpose:

This paper examines the influence of blockchain technology on emerging digital economies, with particular emphasis on its opportunities, risks, and long-term implications for economic development and public policy.

Design/methodology/approach:

The study adopts a qualitative research approach based on a systematic synthesis of existing academic literature, supported by conceptual analysis and illustrative quantitative trend data where relevant.

Findings:

The findings indicate that blockchain technology has significant potential to enhance financial inclusion, improve supply chain transparency, and strengthen governance mechanisms in emerging digital economies. However, persistent challenges—such as scalability constraints, regulatory uncertainty, cybersecurity risks, and infrastructural limitations—continue to impede widespread adoption.

 Practical implications:

The results suggest that policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders should prioritize adaptive regulatory frameworks, institutional capacity building, and public–private partnerships to ensure the sustainable and inclusive implementation of blockchain solutions.

Originality/value:

By integrating perspectives from economics, technology, and governance, this study provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of blockchain’s transformative role in emerging digital economies, offering valuable insights for both academic research and policy formulation.
